Well... every week for the past few years my wife and I would discuss getting a new dog... a couple of weeks ago we finally said, "Lets do it!" We both grew up with bigger dogs (Springers, Labs, Weimerainers(sp)) but decided we would like a smaller dog for our family...
Looking into "family" dogs we fell in love with basset hounds!
Lucy is doing a great job adjusting to our family, as we are to her! Our boys are learning about "pupply nibbles" when she plays!
The only thing I don't know how to work around is digging? Any advice?
What a heartbreaker she is!!! Keep those pics coming!
You say you have a probelm with digging - is it when she is alone outside? Bassets get bored very easily and when they get bored they get into trouble.
Some of mine "dig" at the rugs or furniture trying to nest. This is just normal behavior and I haven't got a clue as to how to correct it.
What a cutie pie!! I love her soptted ears. If she is digging outside at only one or two spots, you might try sprinkling powdered cayenne pepper in the area. One good whiff of that up her sensitive nose may stop her. it has worked for me in the past. Good luck, and enjoy your new Basset. I'm sure you'll be hooked.
Sally and Shermie
actually, it is only one spot! I will have to try the cayenne pepper idea if it persists!
my wife and I laugh at the energy and speed she gets out of no-where!
we get a little stressed since we also have two young boys (four and 18mths) but we know it will be worth it when we can trust her on her own inside a little more
Regarding digging, we built Gunther and Belle a digging pit which they love. They hide all their treasures there ---- oh and in my potted plants -- and in the crevices in my couch.
I love how they think they are being sneaky but half of their buried object is still sticking out when they are done.
Anyway, it's fun to have a digging pit, but you do have to teach them how to use it - usually by burying treats while they watch you and then excitedly digging them up.
Another thing you can try, since she is using just one spot, is to bury some chicken wire there. She'll be able to go just to the wire and no further. While it's fun to dig in nice dirt, chicken wire -- not so much!
You said you used to have large dogs, and then bought a basset because you
wanted to go smaller. That's a good choice. Because then you still get a
substanial dog, but perhaps with a bit more laid back temperament.
