Hey there, I have been reading for the past month or so while I waited for my new puppy, and I just got Ganon a week ago. I don't know how your experiences were with basset pups, but mine has been a stressful week.
I have owned 2 bassets in the past, but both I received as adults. This is my first foray into puppies. He is a very sweet puppy. He has his moments where he is very well behaved. But 75% of the time he is a handful. Potty training is difficult, but that is to be expected (goes 1 outside well, but ALWAYS goes 2 inside). I am using a crate, and he seems to be getting used to it. He is also beginning to understand the physics of a walk/leash. His most difficult area is in biting. I am sure that he is just playing, but he simply bites too hard to be played with properly. Me and my father both are in pain from scratches and bites from trying to play with him (because of course if he is not played with he turns into his bad self :P ) Sorry to make my first post one of kind of frustration, but this whole puppy-thing has me going crazy! I hope that some have went through this puppy stage and can give me some insight! Thanks in advance and I will try to get some pictures up soon! |

http://www.heatherweb.com/cyberhound/board...inhibition'
Above is a link that might help you. The Cyberhound archives are a great resource: I went up to "search" at the top right, typed in "bite inhibition" (you can also try "puppy biting" etc.), and came up with this recent thread- Hope that helps! Welcome! |

If it is any consolation, José was a devil puppy. He would have nice moments but went into these crazy fits that I now realize were just puppy versions of the Basset 500. Hang in there. After about 2 years it settles down!

My Francis, now the most laid-back and placid dog ever, was a horror his first year but I wouldn't trade it for anything. He had ALL the bad habits and it was work to get ahead of them but we perservered and now he's a mellow little marshmallow.
You should read some of the FAQ's here and maybe sign up for puppy obedience which can be very helpful.
