Lily- Kennel ridden for 3 weeks :(:(

I took Lily to the vet today to get x-rays ( she has been limping for 3 weeks and is on a liquid anti-inflamitory)

Something is wrong with the groth plates in her front legs ( the vet gave me a long explaination- didn't really get much of it)
She is 5 months old and the vet wants to make sure the legs have a chance to grow (and heal) without being aggitated while she is still growing.

Sooo... that mean she is stuck in the kennel at all times unless she is being inactive on the couch (and i can keep and eye on her so she can't jump down) and she has to be on the leach outside only long enough to do her business... All this for at LEAST 3 weeks.

It's going to be a long month for all of us! (now Daisy has noone to play with

)

Has anyone had any experience with this type of problem? any advice on how to make it any easier?

I know what you are going through with the crate time and leased potty walks only. We just did that for six weeks because of surgery to repair a torn ACL and giving it time to heal. You might also want to try using a ramp if you have any steps at all and it helps with getting in out out of the car as well. Thankfully Bogie did OK with the confinment, and did not fuss to much. He chewed on bully sticks to help occupy him. We did a lot of keeping him leashed beside us and sat on the floor with him with lots of loving and belly rubs while we watched TV. My husband said he was going to develop rear end callouses before this was over. Just hang in there and I hope Lily will be OK. Keep us posted.

Sorry, I'm still trying to figure the forum out and I always hit the quote....

Jessica, is this like pano?? I have heard of pano before, it happens to mastiffs alot, although none of mine have ever suffered with it. They say it can be seen on ex-rays too...I hope she feels better soon!

I don't think so, The vet didn't identify it as such aways.

She has an extra bump (feels like a bone) on the outside of each leg.
The way the vet explained it, there is some kind of damage or abnormal growth (genetics- which i think is more likely because i noticed the bumps very early on but they wern't bothering her) on each leg where the growth plates are. On each leg the growth plate in one of the two bones is closing faster than the other so she will end up bow legged (sp?)

I don't know if that makes any sense but it's the best i can do! lol

Is it pano? Ruby's legs were growing too fast too which is why we put her on a low protein diet rather than a high one.

I'm not an expert, but doesn't sound like Pano, which is an inflamation of the long bones in the legs. It tends to move from one leg to another, can happen more than once, and is usually noticed when there is sudden limping on a leg with no sign of injury or trauma. This does show up on x-rays. We just went through our second round of Pano with Bogie which was treated with 10 days of crate rest and Deramaxx. He's fine now.
I know when we first started researching the Basset Hound breed and talked to Basset owners, breeders, and our vet, they cautioned us about the stairs (we have a two story home) and jumping down from furniture and in and out of cars with young Bassets. They can often damage the growth plates in their leg bones, and they told us to not allow them to do this until they were at least a year old. Bassets are heavy on the front which increases the risk of damaging the growth plates when they are young.

Wow, this really isn't working. If the idea was to keep her off her front legs i think i need a new plan. She is so frantic in the kennel while i'm home that she spends half her time jumping up and down and climbing the walls.... this is very frustrating- not to mention the constant crying!

You might try hooking her leash to you while you are home. That way you can keep her quiet and she won't be so upset in her crate.

I think one of the hardest things is keeping a hound quiet.

Just a little tip to everyone. When it comes to problems with bones
and joints it might be a good idea to visit a vet that has experience
with bassets, as they tend to be a bit different from other dogs.

Good luck to you, and I hope it's something that fixes itself soon.
