Hi guys. is there any special things i need to do when moving with my 2 bassets for the first time into a new house??
Lexie is turning 2 in a few days and Softie is almost 4 months old?
They both have only stayed in our house we stay in now!!
Also everybody is giving us flack for wanting to neuter softie (male) ?? we don't intend on breeding with them and he is becoming very dominant and mildly aggressive (bit my husband when feeding him).
Not much advice about the move, I'm afraid, just know this: the most important thing to your pups will be to have you there, wherever they go. I'd say let them sniff around a bit, get to know the lay of the land. We anticipate selling our home of 30 years in the next year or so, and my first concern in a new house will be adequate yard space for the pups. Otherwise, they'll be fine -- so long as their favorite chairs are available !
As for neutering -- just please do it. You will have a much nicer, happier pet to share your life with. Can you describe how the bite occurred?
we have neutered sherlock when he was 7 month old....when we got him back i don't think he even realized what has happened to him. He is as playful as he was before...if you are not going to breed him just neuter him...
the sad part is that I think it was harder on me than it was on him....
I moved last year and I took them to the house each time I moved in boxes and they did fine. They are both around 5 and had only lived in one house before then.
We have moved all over the country with Ruby and she's done very well as long as she's with us.
We have always just taken Ruby into the house and let her sniff all over the place (with us following her around) and have shown her the door etc. We put her bed down right away (she's not allowed on the furniture) and show her once where her food and water bowl will be. Ruby has done very well. Just make sure there's no other animal smells in the house B4 you bring them or move in. That can cause a big problem otherwise.
I've only moved with Lily and she had a really hard time with it. Once she saw boxes packed she started peeing on the carpet, when she hadn't had an accident in about 6 months or so. In her defense when her last owners were moving they gave her up, so maybe she related the incident...anyways, just be prepared for anything with the move. I would definitely be very patient with your two. I think it depends on the dog and how they will handle the move.
As far as neutering, people definitely have different opinions on this. Imo it is what responsible dog owners do. If you're not breeding them they should be "fixed" so as to prevent any unplanned puppies occuring. Both of mine are rescues so they were taken care of before I got them. I do remember that my childhood Dalmation held a grudge it seemed against the vet after he got neutered...after his surgery he always had to be muzzled.
Crazy question but in South Africa, when you flush the toilet, does the water flow clockwise or counter-clockwise? Call me nuts but I really don't know.
As I've mentioned many times before. Neutering dogs is illegal in Norway
if there is not a health reason. That being said, I'm not all opposed to neutering
or spaying animals, but when people do it for behavior problems they should
keep in mind that it might not be ruled by hormons. Neutering is not always a
quick fix to behaviour issues.
I didn't think about the dog smells. The previous owner had 2 dogs...mmmm....i'll have to look into that...I think they were never let into the house - sad I know!!
Our dogs are allowed everywhere except on the beds...and tables obviously... so I think they'll be fine if they smell their own on the couches or whatever...
We are having Softie neutered for unwanted puppy purposes aswell...I dont want a neighbourhood filled with little basset-huskies or basset-jack russels!! and we are keeping our hand on him with the discipline as our puppy trainer taught us with Lexie, but with Wellington(our previous boy) it did calm him down a bit and Softie, although so tiny, has already started mounting Lexie - unbelievable!!!
We don't intent breeding with our 2 so I think it is best...thanks again guys!!!
will keep you posted!!! move is taking place on Friday!
ps... the toilet question...i hope im understanding this correctly -I don't always interpret everything properly as my home language is afrikaans - mmmm...i don't think our toilet water swirls...but we have hot water and flushing toilets and no elephants/lions in the streets - like lots of people believe!!! hee hee
no in SA we have our dogs neutered and actually get a consession (discount) for having them neutered as there are sooo many unwanted dogs....
