Hi...Have been lurking for a few days and I must say you all have beautiful bassets =)

I have 4 bassets myself: Molly, Cash, Sadie, and the newest (6 weeks old) Raven.

*CASH & PUPPY

*SADIE

*PREGANT MOLLY (Cash is daddy)

The following 3 pix are of Marty, the basset we had until Saturday who passed due to Parvo despite of vaccinations. He is the puppy of Molly and Cash.

*Right before Molly had the pups

Since Marty passed, we decided to keep this angel and named her Raven. Her mommy is Sadie and Daddy Cash

Molly and Sadie are sisters out of the same litter. We couldn't decided between the two, so we bought Sadie and ended up with Molly 6 months later =) How unique. We were meant to have both =)

We bought Cash at a local pet store at 4 months old. He definitely has the most personality. Sadie is the drama queen/princess, and Molly is the mature one.

We didn't plan for them to get pregnant, but we hadn't gotten them fixed either. We gave away Molly's pups (She had nine at birth, 8 living, but we kept Marty, so 7*) even though they are AKC registered. I am pregnant myself and it was way too hard to keep up with the pups and wait for the litter papers to come in.

That is my intro =)

Hmmm.

1. Buying from a pet store - flaming topic on the forum
2. Buying too young - another flaming topic on the forum
3. Accidental pregnancy (still another flaming topic) because nobody bothered to spay or neuter (boiler temp hot topic)
4. And for the grand finale, and to ensure tempers get hot enough: death by parvo (see above)

Um. Yea.

Obviously you didn't read the post.....
The six week old PUP CAME FROM MY HOUNDS SO , THE PUPPY ITSELF LIVED HERE FROM DAY ONE (we didn't buy it, some intelligence..um yeah).....As far as buying from a pet store, we felt sorry for the little guy because he was in a little cage and at 4 months old....Who are you to judge? Also, death by parvo...not my fault since I spent thousands of dollars trying to keep him alive. As for my dogs getting preggo..we hadn't intended for them to get pregnant until the summer months, and this was their first and only time. Man, you gotta love these "quick-to-judge" know-it-alls!

Quite a few of us on Cyberhound, including Biscuit, have spent years trying to educate people to be responsible dog owners. One first starts out by purchasing a dog from a responsible breeder or getting a dog from a rescue organization or humane society. Never a pet store because that supports puppy mills. You may have saved one but millions more will take his place. Puppy mills will only cease to exist if there is no market.

Responsible owners have their pets spayed and neutered. The only reason for breeding is to improve the breed. Sounds like things got out of hand for you, both your bitches got pregnant and you had more than you could handle. This is not responsible breeding. Responsible breeders test for genetic diseases. Their dogs participate in conformation, field trials and performance events.

Biscuit pointed out that certain topics cause people to have strong feelings. Stick around and I'm sure you see what she means. Hopefully you'll also learn something in the process.

The important thing is my dogs are all healthy, vet checked on a regular basis and up to date on their meds and vaccinations. As for irresponsible breeding, I have to disagree. Parvo can be contracted from any dog's feces that are infected, so this is NOT a genetic disorder.

So -- you lost a six-week-old puppy to Parvo who was bred by you (accidentally, of course), even though your dogs are 'healthy' and 'up to date on their meds and vaccinations'. If your dogs were truly healthy, where did the Parvo come from?

Hope you have a flame-retardant suit to wear 'cause you're gonna need it. Something really stinks here, and it smells like b*llsh*t.......

Ooopss -- sorry. I did read the post, but with so many puppies and dogs, it's a little confusing.

At any rate, the point is -- Parvo is preventable with immunization. Spending thousand of dollars after the fact rarely works in the dog's favor, but prevention with vaccination could have saved a little life here. And yet, you claim all of your dogs are up to date in these things. Poor little puppy.......
