but now it's been confirmed once for all.
"Basse" - nice name for a basset - flew out from 5th floor and landed unhurt below.
The owners found him shaking in a bush below, 2 hours later.
The vet couldn't find any damage, and concluded with "he must have flown!"

I was late to church this morning after spending 30 minutes chasing my 3 y/o Basset Carlton around our yard and adjacent woods. He is always on the leash outside but managed to scamper out the door as I was closing it. He is very mischevious and sees everything as a game. We are dealing with not coming when called, counter cruising, disruptive barking, and other attention seeking behavior. (which I don't understand because he lives in the house and sleeps with my husband/me) He does know sit, down, and rolls over for treats only. He is house and crate trained. Stay is beyond his comprehension. I was raised with dogs and have trained many over the years but none like this.

I need some advice regarding my 9 or 10 year old Basset, Lady Bug. (She's my "failed foster.") She was diagnosed (biopsy) with IBS in May after a very long string of upper and lower GI upsets. We've been able to manage it very well with a restricted diet and meds EXCEPT when she gobbles down something she shouldn't. Problem is that she is (when not in a GI upset) quite a chow hound. The last three episodes have been because she has made a snack of other dogs' poop. When she's on leash I can control this but there is a dog park near us and that's where she's been getting into trouble. Neither she nor I have a particularly good time when I follow her around the park. (Plus it means that I'm ignoring her "sis", Bess...) I'm considering putting a wire muzzle on Lady Bug. Does anybody have any thoughts as to what dangers/issues there would be with this? (The owners who bring their kids to this park are pretty watchful for bad behavior and Ms. Bug is a submissiive girl who doesn't ask for trouble. I'm thinking wire instead of mesh because she's a big panter and drinks a lot of water while at the park.)

Thanks in advance! I am generally just a lurker and was on the old forum as "Bess' Mom;" for the life of me, though, I couldn't get set up on the new boards under than username.

I've been lurking around and reading this forum for over a month now, trying to learn the ins and outs of raising a basset and making sure that the breed was right for our home. We have 4 cats who we love dearly, and we want kids someday. Definitely within the next 2 years. Everyone's posts have convinced me that we are up for the challenges and joys brought by basset ownership.

That said, we brought home our sweet little 8-week-old Molly last night. She is a bundle of energy and cuteness...as we expected. She seems to whine a lot, though, and I wanted to know if this is something that is normal. She is not ill, and it's not due to a need to go outside to potty (sometimes it is and we are learning to recognize the difference). I am thinking that this is part of her adjustment phase and that with such big changes (leaving mom, dad, sisters, the only home she knew), she is just out of sorts. She is eating a little bit and drinking her water...all what I'd expect at this point. Experienced basset owners, what is your take on this?

Thanks in advance for your help. Now I must go watch her while she sleeps...too cute :)

We have a pair of bassets, brother & sister 1 1/2 years old. They are just adorable and all, but are chewers. When can we reasonably expect this to slow down. They seem to love outside vegetation of all kinds (we do watch them closely on this), furniture and whatever they can reach off tables and counters. They especially like to chew on each other, never hurting each other but she is the more aggresive and will chase him all around. I thought basset's were suppose to be laid back. Someone needs to tell her she is not a jack russell.

Chloe is a bloodhound/basset and a little over 6 years old. She is very smart, but allot of times when I let her out in front (which is rare) her nose goes to the ground and she keeps going. Any other time when I call her from the back yard (which is fenced) she comes right away. What is the deal?

Here is something else I don't understand. When she has to go to the bathroom she will find me in the house and stare at me. Then When I say "Do you have to go pee pee? she still stares at me. Then I open the door for her to go out, she still doesn't move. Fine! I shut the door and go back to what I was doing. Two seconds later she walks to the door and lays down.

I get up again, open the door and she goes out to go to the bathroom. Is she controlling me? I know she is. I swear she knows exactly what she is doing. She never barks if she wants something, SHE JUST STARES AT ME. Like I know what she wants? 99% of the time I do, but she has to do it her way, not mine.

Dinner time? SHE STARES AT ME
Bed time? SHE STARES AT ME (She sleeps next to me)
Pee Pee time? SHE STARES AT ME.

Also, I cannot break her from jumping on people when they visit me. She is 64 pounds! How do you break a dog from jumping on people?

So many questions, sorry about that. Could use a little help.

Thanks all for listening to my rant, especially my first post
Look at her pics I uploaded. She is so sweet

good morning everyone! it's been a while since i've posted! just wondering though, does anyone else's basset have a problem with chronic colitis or am i just lucky? toby had colitis a couple months ago, and after antibiotics and all that i thought he was fine. however, he has a problem gaining weight and no matter how much i feed the guy he always looks too skinny. like ribs showing skinny. last night we were up all night again with diarrhea(him not me), and it was bloody just like last time. gotta take him to the vet tonight or in the morning. just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what steps they have taken to keep this under control?

Interesting article on Philly Dawg site Sept 2nd:

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/pets/

"Pennsylvania's most notorious animal abuser, Linda Bruno, is featured in a compelling Associated Press story examining the nexus between animal hoarders and "rescuers" and detailing efforts by researchers to persuade the American Psychiatric Association to include "hoarding" in its diagnostic list.
Readers may recall Bruno ran Tiger Ranch, a "no-kill" rescue known throughout the Eastern seaboard and as far west as Indiana as a safe haven for unwanted and feral cats.
Hardly. As the AP piece by Sue Manning notes, Tiger Ranch was in reality a feline death camp, that took in 7,000 cats over just one 14-month period and adopted out a grand total of 23."

"The Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium at Tufts University is urging the American Psychiatric Association to include animal hoarding in its next update to its diagnostic bible."
