If you feel as strongly about the Michael Vick Dogfighting Indictment, please take a moment to visit this page and submit your thoughts to the NFL. The loud clear message needs to be sent that even being indicted on something like this is cause for big punishment. Let's see the NFL prove how ethical they are . . .

I did this last week. I have to say, I seriously doubt the NFL will do much. Morality and good citizenship don't seem to be high on the list of any pro sports organization. But it's worth a try.

Michael Vick is scum!

A few thoughts :

Everyone has known for years about dog fighting and it's connection to illegal gambling and the drug culture. It seems that the government has finally realized that cracking down on dog fighting will give them a wedge to go after these jerks for gambling and drugs- if that wasn't involved, I don't think they'd be this concerned.

And blessings on feeble old Senator Byrd for his impassioned speech last week: " It's barbaric! It's barbaric! IT'S BARBARIC!" I thought he was going to cry.

I'm delighted that this is getting alot of media coverage and that people are truly outraged. About time!

With the new commissioner i think this will change. I really believe that Vick is going to be set as an example for everyone else. I was watching ESPN and a lot of players saying that dog fighting is a big thing in NFL circles, and i think it will change now.

I hope the publicity continues along with public outrage.

In NM they are introducing new legistation to make it easier to prosecute people who engage in dog fighting. There are laws on the books, but I guess they are almost impossible to enforce.

As an aside, do not, I repeat DO NOT, send money to the HSUS for this. The Vick dogs are NOT in their care.

Permission to crosspost...

The Humane Society of the United States has mounted a huge campaign to raise money to care for the dogs rescued from Michael Vick's dogfighting ring. The plea comes complete with a heartbreaking picture of one of the injured dogs. (Not surprisingly, studies have shown that people donate more when shown a picture of or told a story about a single animal needing help.
HSUS is very clever at fundraising. The Humane Society of the United States does not give any money to the local Humane Society that helps dogs in your area.

1) There is a disclaimer in fine print at the bottom of the form which says your donation may be used for other HSUS programs and may not be used to help the dog fight victims.

2) There has been no accounting for the nearly $20 million HSUS raised for the Katrina dogs and cats. The organization is under investigation by the Louisiana Attorney General for their handling of that situation.

3) HSUS has NO shelter. It is a corporate office building in Washington, DC.
It is supposedly "overseeing" the care of the dogs that were seized from Vick's house, but we don't know where the animals are. Will the shelter actually providing their care receive all the donations this campaign generates?

4) There is no reason to believe that your contributions will go to help the dogs seized from Michael Vick or any other dogs or cats. HSUS spends most of its money on legislative efforts to make dog breeding impossible and pet ownership more difficult, more expensive, and more dangerous.

5) HSUS claims its servers crashed from the response to their first appeal for money for these dogs, yet they are still out there beating the drum for more money, still claiming more is needed for the Vick dogs.

And if you are still considering writing that check, read the following quotes from Wayne Pacelle, president of HSUS

"I don't have a hands-on fondness for animals. To this day I don't feel bonded to any non-human animal. I like them and I pet them and I'm kind to them, but there is no special bond between me and other animals.
Quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 251.

"We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding." Quoted in Animal People, May, 1993

When asked if he envisioned a future without pets: "If I had my personal view, perhaps that might take hold. In fact, I don't want to see another dog or cat born. Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 266.

============ ========= =========

Where are the millions in contributions they already receive every year?
If you have money to contribute, please send it to your **local** shelter.
Donations received by local shelters do help animals. The money sent to
HSUS does not.

Soundtrack, you make some excellent points. I hadn't really dissected it down to the fundraising--matter of fact, I only was encouraging the sending of the message to the NFL for punishment of Vick. Just as we never really know how much of our foreign aid is received by third world countries, or how much of the money for starving children goes for administrative costs, this is another cause which is hard to see accountability in, or to regulate. Lots of these causes are so top heavy that much of the deserved aid for the suffering recipients is diverted to administration costs. There are those from the school of "give with a glad heart", and those who want proof that their money is well used. I agree that accountability is an important issue.

Between animal testing, the problems in the food supply industry, and this dogfighting issue, I feel so disgusted and depressed! These stupid, ignorant people would sell their mother to the devil to make a dollar. And as Murraysmom stated, they are only starting to crack down because they see the link to the drug criminals through dogfighting.

I agree with Soundtrack about NOT sending money to HSUS. If you have money to give to a worthy cause give it directly to a shelter or rescue where it actually will go to the animals.

In addition to letting the NFL know how you feel, please contact the corporations that pay Vick. The ones I know of are Kraft Food, Coca-Cola & Nike. I'm sure there are others. The only way to stop corproation from paying people like Vick is to hit them in their pocketbooks.

Keep in mind, too, that Vick has NOT been found guilty yet. As much as I despise dog fighting, and I'd like to see anyone involved strung up by their gonads, I belive that one is still presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Let's have a fair trial and THEN hang him.

I know there are varying oppinions about this, but here it goes...

Just an update for those of you who didn't know. Nike has temporarily put their relationship with Vick on hold. They are no longer selling their Vick related items until after the trial, etc. Nike said that of course Vick deserves a fair trial and they have not terminated their relationship with Vick it is just on hold (without pay I may add) until all is said and done. And although Reebok doesn't have a partnership with Vick they do have one with the NFL and have too pulled their Vick related items.
