After the last AHBA hunt in NY, Belle has moved up to 7th or 8th in the top ten hound standings in the American Hunting Basset Association. This is based on total points earned during the calendar year, based on number of hounds defeated in a hunt
Not bad for a spoiled rescue hound ---- as you may remember, Belle is Susan's house pet rescue basset. She still has a slight problem with strange, new people, but no problem in the field. On Sunday in NY, she placed 2nd. Your hound might be able to do about the same. I'm not saying that any basset will run rabbits, but many still have the ancestral instincts. Give them a chance and they might surprise you. Belle loves to run and will try to pull Susan toward the running areas at a hunt. SHE LOVES TO RUN RABBIT!!!!! |

Great story, Dean! Congrats to Belle and Susan!
We have a rescue that we've started in tracking. She loves it, and it's the high point of her week. You're right about the instincts being there, just waiting for opportunity. ![]() ![]()

Thanks so much Dean and all!
Just a thought for those of you in the mid-atlantic area who want to do something really fun with your basset - Come out to the AHBA hunt in Elizabethtown PA on Dec 13 or 14 (you can come both days or just one). The hunting grounds are completely fenced and it's a smaller place so it's very easy to manage. If you haven't tried this yet, you are in for a totally fun day and your fur kids will have a blast. It's not often any of us who have dogs of any kind get a chance to really let them do what they were born to do - their job - nothing makes my two happier than smelling rabbits and they don't have to know what they are doing to compete, they either do it naturally or have fun wandering around off-leash with you. It doesn't matter. It's for fun!!!! Really hope to see some of you in PA. Susan O. |
