Amber, my first basset experienced a herniated disc, when Kevin picked me and Buffet up at the airport from the 1999 Nationals. When he left the house to meet us she was fine, and when we got home, she wasn't using her back legs.
Because of her age and the fact that she hadn't lost the response to deep pain, we opted to treated her with steroids and crate rest. She responded well and was back up on her rear legs within about 2 weeks. She was never quite as strong on them as previously, but she never had a recurrence. The first treatment for Myrtle started with steroids, but when she didn't respond quickly to them the vet decided she needed the surgery (darned if I can remember what it was called, but it was freakin expensive). Afterwards I did physiotherapy and towel walking to get her back on her feet.
The second time we started with steroids and when she didn't respond quickly the vet told me she needed surgery again or she'd never walk again. I couldn't afford it a second time, but she was comfortable and continent so I decided to take her home and look into getting her a cart. I continued her physio and towel walking, and also gave her a homeopathic remedy (can't remember which one) on the theory that it couldn't hurt and the stuff is cheap. I did get her back up on her feet without surgery.

When my Toby had a partially herniated disc we treated him with steroids and 1 month of crate rest. We also had a good response to acupuncture. He was not completely paralyzed but couln't walk without falling over.
I think he was 11 and probably wouldn't have done surgery at his age. He died of unrelated causes a few months later. Thanks for the update. Keep us posted. |

I had to put My male Basset Innkeeper down December last because of this very thing. He went lame in one day and was taken to the vet imediatly. x-ray's showed nothing. He was given steroins muscle relaxors and anti-biotics just in case. He did not repond at all and lost all response to pain or stimulation with in 3 days was completely incontinent and a very miserable dog. I made a very difficult desision to put him down at 10 years. It is amazing how fast he went. He left a female who had been with him since she was 7 weeks old. She is having a rough time ajusting and goes to his favorite midday relaxing place and howls for a couple hours every day. SHe is getting a little better I think but it has been a difficlut couple months for "the hounds".
