Default Back problems

my basset is having trouble walking on her hind legs; my vet put her on steroids and after 5 days she still cannot walk too steady.
i am so sad for her...I think we will have to put her down?
any thoughts?

have xrays been done? what is the diagnosis? is surgery an option??

as others will post, a vet with basset experience is key.

My thoughts.

How long has she had problems with her back legs & what is your vets diagnosis? Have they gradually been getting worse, has she had an accident, is she in pain?

If either of our dogs experience lameness or gait problems stemming from back or any other skeletal problem, I take them to their chiropractor immediately as she is far better at diagnosing structural issues. The elder has suffered two slipped discs, one prolapsing into the spinal column causing short term paraplegia (nearly a week) & the specialist has said without the chiropractors input it is unlikely he would have walked again.

Back leg problems can be caused by various issues but until you have a clear idea of the cause, it is a little early to talk of putting her down.

So sorry to hear about your girl. Like VV and 3K asked what is your vet's diagnosis? I certainly would not give up on her.
FWIW when one of mine ruptured a disc she was completely paralysed in her back legs (she had to have an op) but now she is running, charging around and is her happy self.

Did the vet not also recommend putting her on crate rest to let the injury heal? Giving her steriods just makes her feel better, so she is more likely to overdo it and injure the back further.

She should be on strict crate rest (only coming out to pee etc, on leash). For a good six weeks.
