It happens, but it's not common. Blue eyes are considered faulty, so responsible breeders try to avoid them.

It is what "The Standard "for the Basset calls for(see BHCA website) the eyes are to be very dark .Lighter eyes are allowed (but not preferred) if the dog's coat is lighter. For example a red and white basset 's eyes may be a bit lighter in color than a black or tri colored bassets eyes.

One of the parents carry the gene for the blue eye, possibly the breeder didn't know this, possibly they did and didn't care. There are people breeding purely for pets instead of breeding for quality, they are not helping in the least to get rid of the faults in this breed,be it wrong color eyes, wrong temperament,or health issues.

there can be none genetic cause of it as well because all coloring requires migration of pgiment cell and environmental factor can effect migration of pigment cells. Blues eye occur when there is no iris pigment. Blue eyes can be but not always associated with other problems like deafness, bilateral or inilateral.
In basset hound and all dogs breed true Identical twins can look completely different because of environmental factors effecting cell migration. |
