Oh, it doesn't mean she's not cute ('cause she is), or that she won't make a good pet. One of my best dogs was a long-coated basset, which is a disqualification, but I thought she was beautiful. Still not correct , though.

Throw backs happen and have nothing to do with good breeding. A very good (friend) breeder I know had a blue eyed boy in a litter. He is show quality gorgeous but has blue eyes. No record of any blue eyes in a very long registered pedigree. Some say it dates back to the breeding of Talbot Hounds (white so very strong tendency for blue eyes) with St Huberts. Up until around the 17th C you saw a lot of white Bloodhounds (which can now have blue eyes). It's like Soundtrack's Gabby - some would say it's from Queen Alexandra's Clumbers mixing with the Bassets at the turn of the19th to the 20th C. Her Sandringham affix is/was quite well known for a few oopsy crosses.
Just to add blue eyed Bloodhounds are in no way from bad breeding they were considered on the endangered list of becoming extinct over her - until one got best in show...you see a bit more of them now.

Very true - but genetics are funny things that can rear their heads at any time
. We have a few whispy haired Bassets here from very good breeders - and always regarded as very special. Queen A did very well at Crufts ![]() tx

My Harry Basset has light green/blue eyes. I think he was the only one of his litter to have light eyes (was from a litter of 11 puppies, all boys except one!). People always comment on his eyes, usually complimentary but a few people have said he has 'human' eyes instead of dog eyes!!! Not sure what they mean!
You can see his eyes slightly in this photo |

Ooh Harry is very cute as well!!
I've always liked "strange" eye colours on animals.. Makes them special! Though Harvey is special to me even with his regular brown eyes ![]() Sent from Petguide.com Free App |

Yes Sadie's eyes look very human, even her brown one! Harry is adorable as are all Bassets I have seen on this forum!
