Hiya my name is Lindsay and I am new on here and need some advice and help....
I have an 8 mth basset hound called Masie who has just gone into season...She has been in heat about a week and is bleeding loads and it also looks like her bits are hanging out and she also looks really swollen too. I was just wondering if this was normal when they are in season as I am a little worried about it. |

Swelling and blood spotting are both normal, and the amount will vary with the individual dog. However, if you feel the bleeding is excessive or if things are "hanging out" you should have her checked.

![]() Talk to your vet about getting her spayed in another few months as the maternal Basset can quite often suffer with false pregnancies which does drag them down. If she's been in for a week, her discharge should be starting to become much more of a pale straw colour which will be getting to the time she's going to be willing to mate. Keep her under strict control for the entire 21 days + she will be in season. She's too young to be a mum
