Hi! I just joined this forum, hoping to gain some insight and find out about some options for my beloved basset hound Dozer. A week ago, we took him to the vet to find out about some serious swelling on his back left leg. The vet took some samples, and I asked what her thoughts were. She said not good. Although we haven't gotten results back yet, she is afraid it may be cancer. He's only 6 years old, and is the light of my and my fiance's life. My vet told me, because of him being a long backed breed, we wouldn't have the option to amputate. But I have done some looking around online, and have found that it is possible to have prosthetics made for some cases. I know it's kind of a long shot, and nothing is even for sure yet, but I want to know what my options, if any, are. Has anyone ever heard about a prosthetic being successfully used for a basset hound? Is it even fair to do, or am I just being selfish? Any help you guys could give me would be great!

I haven't seen a prosthetic on a basset but I have seen a cart to help a basset with a paralyzed hind quarters.

there are three legged basset that do fine as well especial a rear leg . but yes there are a number of companies that make custom doggie prosthetics. Given the nature of bone cancer and the pain involved amputation is the only alternative to death at that point any aditional risk to the back is minor.
and to the point a basset back is no longer than a labrador's back of GSD back etc. the only difference is the leg length. Prothetics dogs Jame the basset hound |

Since it's a back leg I don't see any reason why he should not be able to manage without it. A front leg can be more problematic for this breed, in that case it depends on the build of the individual dog.
Within no time you'll forget that he's missing a leg. If your vet is reluctant, get a second opinion.

There's a vet here in the UK that does amazing work with prosthetics - I know it's the wrong side of the pond but if there's one here then there's bound to be more over with you guys. Definately worth looking into.
Fingers and paws crossed for Dozer. |

Dozer does not have cancer!!! We are sooo happy! The vet still needs to run more tests, but feels like cancer is out. Anyone know anything about degenerative bone disease? She figures that's the most likely issue.

Check out Eddie's Wheels! Eddies Wheels|Dog Wheelchairs and Other Pets I love that company. They are a small family business, and love helping animals. They build custom carts mainly for dogs, but have done them for all kinds of animals including a therapy sheep!
I believe they also have a program where they will customized a used cart for a dog if you are looking to save some money. Check out this great video on them: Eddie's Wheels Profile on NECN - Wheelchairs for Dogs and Handicapped Pets - YouTube Here is a video of a basset using an Eddie's Wheel cart. I love how the lady has trouble keeping up her basset on the walk!: ...and here is a video of them measuring a paralyzed basset: Hope this helps and Dozer learns to live a happy life the three legged way! |

I'm thinking I would be getting a second opinion, preferably from a vet more familiar with the breed. This one sounds a little lost.
