Default Licking......

Does anyone have any issues with their Basset licking excessively....OMG it drives me crazy. She mainly does it when she has to go potty instead of barking. She wakes us up by licking her paws and continues by licking us.

I wasn't sure if this was normal for these little furbabies.

It can be like an OCD in Dogs. Vinny has always licked his front feet but not till they are sore only like a nervous habit. There are reasons to have her looked at if she is making her feet sore,or her feet are itching etc. But if she isn't doing any damage just watch her in case there is a change and it gets worse.

Bowser drives me nuts licking his feet. He does it because they get sore
I usually just tap him and tell him to stop, and he does. I'd rub them for him but he hates having his paws touched.
He does it when he wakes up in the moring at like 4am, or 6am, depending on when we've gone to bed...licks licks licks, and then comes up to nose me in the face to go outside *lol*

He usually just cries when we're downstairs, and he wants out, but he does go up behind my husband...only on his side...and licks the back of his arm from behind the chair. He HATES it, but i laugh every time! hehehe

I made the mistake of ignoring excessive licking a couple years back. It turned out Bentley had a chemical burn as a result of the pool cleaners pouring an ungodly amount of hydrochloric acid into our pool without warning us. When we went to drain it after a rain storm his back paw must have come in contact with the open drain, which lead to irritation, then to him licking the back 2 inches of his pad clean off.
Just imagine trying to heal an open wound on the bottom of a dogs leg, without a pad to keep it elevated and dry.

His paw/leg/life was saved by our vet who did absolutely everything right and instructed us on how to heal a seemingly impossible wound.
As for the state of the pad, once the swelling went down a couple of inches didn't seem all too bad. In fact I have trouble telling which paw it was thanks to the fur growing over the affected area.

Long story short, monitor her.

My cocker licks his feet constantly too. Vet has looked at them numerous times and there is nothing there. He said it was a compulsive behavior for him. I only have to say Rufy when he is doing it and he stops! Drives me potty somedays

Bogie licks the carpet and the kitchen tile floor. We think it may be boredom that causes him to do it. He as done it since day "1" when we got him as a 10 month old. We know he spent a lot of time in the kennel before we got him, so possibly something to do occupy himself. If we see him doing it we try to distract him.

Libby licks her front feet and recently has been licking furniture. I don't know if it is OCD or what. She does not have the frito smell so it may not be yeast. If I am around I tell her to stop and she usually does.

I am off to the vet on Friday because she has this weird scab, maybe growth on one of her back toes. We have monitored it for a week and it has not gone away so I am seeking a professional opinion.
