Default Goopy/Sticky "tears"

I have a question regarding goopy tears.

Copper is almost 2 years old. We started fostering him a few months ago and adopted him shortly after. His medical history is limited. What I do know though is that a couple months ago, he only had an occasional booger in his eye that I would wipe out with a soft damp cloth.

I've noticed in the last week or so that he is now getting full on tear stains down his face. I wipe them off at the same frequency but there is certainly a lot more boogery goopy tears than there were previously.

Thoughts on what that might be? His eyes themselves haven't changed in appearance (no cloudiness ect.). His vet visit is next week, but I thought I'd throw this out there in case someone might have an idea ahead of time.

My first thought is allergies as that closely describes Annie's eyes and her runny eyes are caused by allergies. She gets tears, non-goopy, but if I am not diligent about wiping them the tears get dirty and turn into goopy sleepybugs.

Keep us posted please!

Dry eye is another possibility- the vet can diagnose it with a simple test. If he has dry eye it means that he will need special perscription eye drops - cyclopsporin or tacrolimus- to restore tear production. If not treated, the eyes are painful and can become ulcerated. Here's a link: Canine Dry Eye Treatment with Cyclosporine - VetInfo . Murray has suffered with dry eye for years.

One of my Bassets had dry eye some time ago and I was getting drops from the vet that they were charging me over £12 for until someone said I could get the same thing online or at Boots chemist for £1.99 that contains the same ingredients and did the job fine!!! It's now £1.29 on offer!!!

Isopto Plain 0.5% 10ml is used topically to provide tear-like lubrication for the symptomatic relief of dry eyes and eye irritation associated with deficient tear production. Also used as an ocular lubricant for artificial eyes. Eye drop solution contains Hypromellsoe 0.5% w/v.

Thanks guys. I will have him checked out. A couple months after we started fostering him (and one of the reasons we adopted him shortly after), Copper broke out in a huge allergic reaction to something in the grass. His pads cracked and bled, he licked his feet till they were raw, and he became temporarily lame in one of his feet because of how bad his foot had cracked.

Maybe the tears are a precursor to the rest of the reaction. I also recently turned off our allergen reducing air purifiers. That coincides with his symptoms. I just need to get replacement pads for it, and we'll see if his symptoms go away. If not, I'll have him tested for dry eye.

Worm had yellow goopy eyes a coupla times. Got ophthalmic antibiotic ointment for it, which helped. I also give him OTC (overthecounter) eye drops once or twice a week to prevent his eyes from getting too dry.

My 3 year-old has had tear production issues since he was a pup. Tried a few different ointments but the only one that provided long term, almost permanent relief is Optimmune. Around $80AUD (australian) for a tube.
I was instructed to apply it twice daily for a month after the usual eye wash with cotton buds, then another month once daily and finally every two days for a fortnight.

After that first month his tear production went from 2-3mm (the minimum healthy test result is 12mm..) to over 15mm in both eyes.

Optimmune is another Cyclosporin product- from what I understand, cyclosporin or tacrolimus are the two things that can help keep dry eye, caused by faulty tear duct production, under control. We use tacrolimus when Murray starts having problems with dry eye; one reason we switched from cyclosporin is that Murray uses tacrolimus to heal sores on his nose when his discoid lupus acts up. And yes, it's really expensive, about $50 for a tiny tube, six week supply. But it works.

Can dogs have Benadryl for allergies? I don't think my dog has allergies but my cousin, I think is allergic to my dog.
