Default Glucosamine - if/where to buy?

I've had several people suggest glucosamine/chondritin for arthritis prevention for MaeMae (she's fine currently - no issues that anyone can tell). Do you guys think this is necessary? I've had Puritan Pride online recommended as a source - although this seems to be for humans? Is it okay for a dog to take a human supplement. I saw some at the pet store and it was waaay more expensive. So is this one of those you get what you pay for things where there's a difference in quality or is there truly no difference and it's okay to save some money?

Hi MaeMae-- i've been getting hip/joint supplements, mainly for prevention, too, and i just got a big bottle of it at Petsmart. looks like there may not be much evidence it helps, but it doesn't hurt either so that's why i'm on it. hadn't thought about the human supplements. sometimes a difference between human & pet medicine is the dosage, since we r much smaller than peeples. that's one thing i thought of.

I buy Yogi's glucosamine online from entirelypets.com. I just recently moved him up to GlycoFlex III. He's been on it for a few years.
One other thing that is very good for dogs with arthritis is a very good quality fish oil with Vitamin E. I use Seapet which I also order from entirelypets.com.
I recently started Yogi on Zeel as well.

Ill give you my human experience! I shattered my ankle tib and fib a couple years ago, I took it religiously for 18 months and can't tell a bit of difference with my residual arthritis in it.
Just my 2 cents!

I agree with Soundtrack. After years of research, the general consensus is that it doesn't help much anything. Seems pretty benign, tho--only thing it'll hurt is your pocketbook

This is just from personal experience with Sophie (she was not a basset, but a furbaby ... Australian Shepard and naughty neighborhood dog)

When she started having joint problems and stiffness, her vet put her on Rymadyl (sp?) which he explained to me was like "aspirin" for dogs. A chewable tablet that she saw as a treat.

Later, as she got older, and found a tumor in her joint, we had to switch to shots (for the life of me I am drawing a blank on the name right now... but you start with several the first week, then one a week, then down to once a month). If anyone is interested, PM me and I will look up her records. The shot was not for the tumor, it was for arthritis.

The shot worked wonders. Sophie went from not being able to go up and down the stairs at all to romping like a puppy. However, on cold/damp days she did slow a bit, but so do I! She kept going for 14 wonderful years.

The only nutricutical with gloucosamine with any real testing behind it is cosequin, which has had trial on dogs, horses and humans with positive results. However those studies were companies sponsored and even though doulbe blind etc etc company sponsored studies are more likey to come out favooribly for the company sponsoring than truelly independant studies. The large studies by the NIH on gloucosomine by it self found it no better than placebo however there was a small subset of individual with moderate to severe pain in which it appears to help but the result were not statistically significant so it warrantes further investigation.

whether there is a synergistic effect the Cosequin claim with there combination of ingredients is very debateable but the NIH study does not disprove the claims of coesequin but it does raise a lot of doubt.

TYhe other proble4m with nutricueticals is they are not heavily regulated and often the strength dosage etc claimes is no where near close to what is actual in the bottle and soametimes they can contain significant amounts of kinow harmfull sibstances. It pays to subscribe to an independant testing lab thate preiodically reports results of off the self testing of various nutricuticals like consumer labs.
