Default Eye problem

My little Winnie (4 years old) developed what looked like conjunctivitis about two weeks ago. Took her to the vet and she was given eye drops that seemed to get things under control. She was tested for glaucoma as a precaution and her pressure was perfectly normal.

Then this past Friday it got worse. Her eye is now cloudy and blue and she seems to be in quite a bit of pain. She was panting and drooling from anxiety. And she wants to sleep with her head up. I took her back to the vet and they ran more tests but decided to refer her to the opthamologist who we're seeing tomorrow morning. Winnie is on pain killers that are helping her sleep and seem to keep her calm.

It is breaking my heart to see my girl in pain and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced similar issues - any advice for keeping her comfortable until tomorrow? Also if anyone has seen an opthamologist for a basset before are there any questions I should ask?

I'm sorry.I don't have any remedy for the pain.Unfortunately, the time frame for (hereditary) Primary Glaucoma is between 4-6 years of age. Good luck I hope she is feeling better soon.

Opthamologist says it's glaucoma. Winnie's still at the emergency clinic as they try to get her eye pressure down. Will hear in a couple hours what our options are.

I am fortunate to have not had to deal with glaucoma, but all of my friends who have say that they wished they had removed the eyes early on to save the dog and themselves a lot of pain, trouble and expense. They said they didn't realize how much pain their dogs were in until they saw how much happier the dog was after the surgery.

Thank you - I've scheduled the surgery for tomorrow. It was a rather easy decision once I read all the posts here and on the blind dog forum (though I had to take a few breaks to cry). I cannot stand to know that Winnie is in pain and I know she will adjust and be back to her old self soon. She'll always be able to find trouble with that nose -no eyes required.

My Fred just had his eye removed last Monday. It was a tough month but the desision was the right one to make. It has broken my heart to watch him bang into things but it is getting better everyday. We see the vet on monday for a check up. I also have spent many nights crying and seeing him in pain. good luck

I pick Winnie up after work tonight. Any advice with post-surgery care?

Winnie is home from her surgery! She had to stay at the animal hospital last night because she was still really whacked out on the drugs. Now she's snoozing on the couch. She's doing great and the vet said she was a real trooper. I braced myself for her eye to look pretty rough but it actually looks a lot better than I expected.

Winnie not happy with wearing the cone because it's so big and she's having trouble with it getting caught on things (carpet, etc.). I think I might cut it shorter tomorrow so she can get around.
