Question Pano?

Has anyones' basset had pano? Jed had a sore leg about a month ago, the vet thought it could be blastomycosis, but the test came back negative. Last week, his other front leg was sore, and this week his back leg. The first was x-rayed and saw nothing wrong. We haven't taken him back since the first leg hurt. It makes him whine at night and limp throughout the day. Could this be what it is and is there any treatment?

He has also gained a lot of weight since he was neutered, even though we have cut back his food, have never fed him table scraps, and gets alot of exercize? Could the problems be related? He is just 1 yr old.

Sometimes he runs and plays like normal, and we wonder if the problem is just in our heads, until it flares up again. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Pano ussual start earlier at the 6 month age or so but it can begin earlier It is fairly common in bassert it ussual begins withg a forlimb. on x-ray if caughgt at rthe right time there can be charicteristic mottling but the mottling is nmot always associated with pain. If the dog is limping you can try and squeeze the long bones on the leg he is limping on in the middle of the bone if there is an indication of pain that occur when squeezing one of the bones that does not occur in other limb it is very likely pano it is vertual the only disease other than cancer that cause pain in the middle of the bone and not at the joints.

There is really no treatment for pano other than possibly some pain reliever. It is self resolving once the dog finsihes growing pano ends it is about abnormal bone growth .

contrary to what many spay/nueter advocates claim the evidence is clear that obesiety is a problem that has links to spaying and nuetering and it often requires a dramatic decrease in the amount fed also give the age of the dog it is also maturity the dogs growth rate has slowed dramatical at this age so the need much less energy as well.

pano while wander is not someth that cause pain only part of the time during the day if it hurtts it hurt all the time until irt resolves and the dog can be fine for a few week or a month when it shows up again in a diferent limb.

Intermmittent pain in the hind limbs is often associated with luxating pettellas the knee cap slips out of place it hurt then the neck minute it back in place and everything is fine. salso basset can be great manipulator and can lear they get extra loving attention by limping and will play it up simply for attention as well while it is not common it certainly does occur as well too.

Our Daisy was "diagnosed" with Pano about a month or so ago. She was about 6 1/2 months at the time. Since she goes about her business as usual, the vet did not seem overly concerned and did not want to medicate her. She still insists on running, jumping, and doing all of the things she shouldn't do despite our best efforts! Good luck.
