My wife and i have a 5yr old female basset called bessie who is our first basset and a 4 yr old rescue basset called rupert.
Over the last two weeks i have noticed bessie sometimes slowly walks upstairs instead of running at bedtime (as they sleep in our bedroom on their bed) and then tonight i went to lift her onto our sofa for a cuddle when she cried in pain and ran off (i put her two front paws up then went to lift her two back legs on) when i went to her i gave her a cuddle and noticed her stomach was very hard, thinking the worst i phoned the emergency vets who suspected early bloat and had me rush her in. They examined her and her stomach has gotten softer, a second vet came in for a 2nd opinion and they came to the conclusion it was probably early arthritis but i should keep an eye on her stomach for swelling and her gums for thurning purple or blue which indicates toxin build up due to bloat. Does anyone have any opinion or experience with this??? |

thanks for the reply.
bit of an update. got bessie home and she was very shaky, my wife calmed her down with lots of cuddles and i got her bed in the front room which she had some rest on for a couple of hours. carried her upstairs at about 12am to our bedroom and put her on her bed where she stayed untill about 5am at which point i woke to find her peeing on the carpet which is very out of character for her as she usually whines at the door to go out, after she wee`d she sprinted round to my side of the bed and seemed very confused, i then coaxed her downstairs to go out where she sprinted round the garden still seeming very confused as to where she was then came running in and sat by my feet at the door. stomach felt hard again but not very swelled up. Worried again i rang the vet who told us to come in and did an ultrasound which she thought showed an `angry` liver (looked quite white on the scan) but the blood test came back clear and so did the xray she had??????????????????? Now the vet is thinking she may have pulled a muscle which is hurting her every now and again which is causing her to tense up which explains the hard stomach (like being doubled over in pain) so she is on painkillers for today and got to keep close eye on her. Its just so frustrating to see her confused and in pain and not know what to do. |

I'm not sure what to say. She is still on pain meds right? Since it is a weekend maybe you could wait til Monday to see how she does. Hopefully she will settle down, if it is that she has pulled a muscle then it would need rest. If she gets no better I think I would call the vet or if possible get a second opinion.
Keep us updated how she is. And good luck. |

crate confinement and rest isnever a bad idea with any suspected orthopeadic issue at the very worst it prevent the dog from further injury and in most case speed recovery and healing however if the dog is in obvious pain and distress I would serious condsider a noter emergency vet visit if nothing else to see if higher doesage or a differen pain med might not make the dog more comfortable but you want to limit the dogs activity even if it is feeling better.

yes she is on antepsin 1g for today and loxicom 1.5mg for 1 week, i suspect it was the meds that she got given before the xray to calm her down that is making her a bit confused at the moment but they should hopefully wear off soon, vet said it was a bit like morphine for dogs

Poor thing!! Sounds like the meds are giving her a hard time.. I hope you get her fixed up and back to normal.

Jed had a sore leg about a month ago, and was on painkillers. Vet thought it was blastomycosis, due to a cough in the spring and uveitis this fall... but test came back neg. We found keeping him off of it, and pain killers for 7 days made him better. He woudn't put any weight on the leg (it was in his shoulder) and he pretty much whined all night. Never noticed any confusion on his part though.
Our last basset had bloat, and you knew it...pretty much looked like he was going to explode, his gut was so distended and hard. Hope the weekend sees her feeling a little better. A basset in pain is a heartbreaking thing to see. |
