Hi there i have a 5 yr old male basset who suddenly got glaucoma a few months ago, unfortunately his right eye had to be removed this week as it was completely blind and causing him alot of pain
he is still healing at the moment but my question has to do with his ears, he has been shaking his head alot so i took him back to the vet because i was worried he would tear the stitches on his eye with his violent head shaking. she said he didnt have an ear infection and gave me ear wash which i used but it didnt really help. He is constantly shaking his head and if i rub his ears he pushes my hand into his head i think the pressure makes it feel better?? he seems to be in alot of pain and last night he woke up and was shaking and whining because of his ears i gave him some of his leftover pain meds and it seemed to help, im not sure if i should get a second opinion from another vet as mine didnt do any tests she just looked at the wax and said it was nothing. if anyone has any advice or has had the same situation i would appreciate any help! also if anyone is dealing with glaucoma i would love to give any advice to help you out!

There are a few members here who have experience with glaucoma so I'm sure they will be along to help you out shortly.
In the meantime, welcome! Your little guy sure is cute! What's his name? As for the ears, I'd definitely get a second opinion. Poor guy doesn't need to suffer.

Welcome, and whatta cute pic of your fella!
sorry to hear about everything he's been going through. With the head shaking-- are they sure it's not from any problem w/the other eye? like increased pressures and such, since his other eye may be at risk from glaucoma also... would want to make sure of that. Yeah, maybe someone else to look over him again and rule out an ear infection. also, Worm has been scratching at his head a lot and doing that thing u described with his ear, too-- i thought it was an ear infection & the vet ruled it out. but i did find a flea on him... eck. fleas in November. so i think that's what was making Worm uncomfortable. my pal Hank on this forum just dealt w/glaucoma and everything. He also has a blog Basset Hound Hank. He & his Ma might be a good source of info-- they would be able to tell u if Hank had any head shaking after his surgery... --Worm

hi worm and annie! im treating his other eye with drops and its looking pretty good i am just hoping he wont have to lose both
his cone is off now so he is much happier but ears are still bothering him i think im going to try putting him on hypoallergenic food again and see if that helps because ive noticed he has a couple of red spots by his neck too. also do either of you or any one else's bassets have a strong odor i dont know how to describe it lol! he seems to get alot smellier than any other dog and im wondering if all bassets are the same?

LOL...hound odor, huh?
Annie doesn't smell...but that's cuz she's a lady Or maybe it's because she's a perfect angel Or maybe it's because she gets probiotics everyday I don't know, I'm thinking it's a combo of a few things, but mostly the first two reasons mentioned

hounds have a stronger "hound odor that other beed but it should not be objectionable. A stron racid oil,/corn chip/ frito's type odor is often the sigh of a yeast infection. In basset yeast infections can occur in skin folds and between toes etc of an otherwise health dog however in most cases it is the result of an underlying skin condition like allergies and/or seborrhea. These condition also tend to rcreate an evirionment that allows yeast proliferation and on such consequence is cronic yeast infections of the ear. without solving the underlying problem you are just treating the symptoms and as soon as you stop treating the problem comes back. Most general paracticing vets are not very good at working through skin issue. I always recommend seeing a specialist in the end it general saves money and agrrivation

Hello! My boy Hank lost both of his eyes due to glaucoma at a very young age. He's not even a year old yet and he's been without his eyes for several months now.
I'm sorry for your loss, and it will be hard for him to cope, but he will. Just keep comforting him and love him like he is no different. Hank did have problems with his eyes while he had the stitches in- He would shake and scratch his head constantly because the stitches annoyed him. My ophthalmologist said that was normal though.. If you have other suspicions, it's always safer to get your dog checked out- or get a second opinion if you are really worried. Hank started out with one eye looking horrible, then it spread to the other eye in only a sheer month. He would cry and only sleep, not play. But now he acts like any other dog - he runs, plays, barks, sniffs around. We have two other dogs who help him around, too. One of them has become his bestfriend and they sleep together and play constantly. That's one thing that I can tell helps him- Having another dog as a companion. I honestly hope your dog doesn't lose it's other eye, but that is a very likely possibility from everything I have researched/been through/found out. I am glad Hank got his eyes taken out, because he is much happier and more playful! It may be your dog's other eye that is so bothersome.. If you are seeing a regular vet, you may want to switch up and see an ophthalmologist in your area instead. Hank was diagnosed wrong twice before I was referred to the correct medical doctor for him. If you have any other questions about glaucoma or questions about how my dog has coped with it, feel free to message me ![]() Here's a website I went to whenever I first found out my Hank had developed glaucoma. These people's stories helped me a lot: Blind Dogs.net - Where dogs see with their heart! - Home Last edited by BassetHoundHank; 12-09-2011 at 09:02 PM. |
