And am looking for advice.
![]() This is Mimi. I was wondering if her eyes are at risk of any kind of saggy eye syndrome I think her problem may be(if she has one) that her upper eye lid is too heavy for her face. She's never had and gunk built up in her lower eyelid but I've only had her a few months. I addopted her from a friend who couldnt keep her anymore. Also was wondering if most bassets are hyperactive. She is super playful and a little skinny for what I'm used too seeing in a Basset. |

Mimi! What a cutie! Welcome to the forum!
She just looks very "basset-y" to me, not like there is anything wrong. How old is she? My Annie is almost 7 yrs and she still has a TON of energy. As for her physique, my guess is that you are used to seeing overweight bassets and that Mimi is just fine. But I'm sure others with a bit more knowledge will be along shortly to welcome you and Mikey T has some good info on basset weight and appearance.

She's a pretty girl, and looks just fine to me.
Contrary to what a lot of people think, a basset should NOT be a huge, overweight dog. Annie is right, there are lots of very knowledgeable people here that can answer any question you have about bassets!

She looks great to us too! Don't fall for the eyes... She is a Basset, and knows how to use them. You'll be eating dinner, and she will sit there with the saddest look on her face and pretend that you have starved her.
Its just the Basset way! She's beautiful! Welcome!

Her eyes look fine to me. Most bassets are overweight, so unless your vet feels she is too thin I wouldn't worry about it. And yes, bassets can be much more active than people expect. They are a hunting dog, after all. Rosie is 10 and she still bounces off the walls.

THANK you all for the responses!
well im happy you all believe she looks fine! i believe she is as well just concerned... i never feed her table scraps and i also have her on weight control food. she never gets treats because i dont believe in food as a congrats, thats a human thing and thats where my extra 45 lbs round my belly came from and i also want to ask if anyone has an obedience issue with their basset. not the stubbornness but well MIMI only listens very well i might add, to ONLY me. will follow my direction and commands only. the rest of my family is like a joke she likes to pick on. normal? and she's 5-6years old. and alot of people think shes the runt and say she's small for a basset. i think she's huge. lol but compared to my basset beagle mix she is huge. here's a couple pictures of my kids together. ![]()

She looks very similar to my 5 yr old Basset. Its not uncommon for a dog to "adopt" one member of the family as its Alpha,, and see the rest of the family as below her in pack order. Training is always a great idea. Both of my girls have been through classes, but sometimes we go for just refresher moments. If you want Mimi to start respecting the rest of your family, food will help. Bassets are highly food motivated. Have your family members give her a command and then reward her with a treat. The only way to get a Basset to do something they don't want to do, is to tempt their stomach. Also, do you feed her meals? If so, it may help to have other family members do her feedings. That should help too.
If your worried about extra weight, you can always use carrots, apples, strawberries, or get weight control dog biscuits. My dogs actually perform better for fruit (or the occasional hard boiled egg piece) than they do for dog treats.
