Default Rabies Vaccine

How early is too early Tito is almost three months, but I am worried because we had a scare today I brought him to a house with a little boy who likes to play with him and their neighbors let their puppy out the little boy had Titoīs leash but couldnīt stop him when he ran to play with the other puppy who then tried to bite Tito they told me he didnīt bite him but I couldnīt tell from where I was standing they also told me their puppy is vaccinated but I donīt know for sure.

Just wondering what the risks if there are any for him getting the vaccine this early, I just donīt trust the people here to have their dogs vaccinated.

when and how to vaccinate a puppy is complicated because when they are young they have immunine system suport from mother milk/colestreum which fades gradually over time when they have this protection there own body does not develop an immune system response so bassical the vaccine does nothing but wait to long and the dog/puppy is unprotected that is why there is general a series of puppy hot given over time. Rabies is a bit diffenrent because of the exposure risk is less in puppies so the protocol is a bit different general at the age of six months and a boster at ! year it is worth consulting with you local vet on this issue but here is some others thoughts

Dr. Jean Dodds' Recommended Vaccination Schedule

UC Davis VMTH Canine and Feline Vaccination Guidelines (Revised 11/09)

Quote:
In accordance with California state law, we recommend that puppies receive a single dose of killed rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age. Adult dogs with unknown vaccination history should also receive a single dose of killed rabies vaccine. A booster is required one year later, and thereafter, rabies vaccination should be performed every 3 years using a vaccine approved for 3-year administration.
David M. McCluggage, D.V.M., C.V.A.

Quote:
Rabies vaccine is licensed by the Federal Government to be effective for at least three years. We recommend that you always keep your animal's rabies vaccine current as required by law. In most states, rabies vaccines are required in dogs and cats. The first vaccine should be given after twelve weeks of age and before six months of age. One year after the first rabies vaccine is given, a second rabies vaccine is required. Thereafter, rabies vaccines should be given as required by the laws in the state in which you reside (generally every three years).
Vaccination Protocols
In the United States, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Task Force designates rabies as a “core” vaccination.
  • IMRAB 1 can be administered annually, beginning as early as 3 months of age.1,2 Where state or local laws require annual vaccination, IMRAB 1 may be used as an annual booster.
  • IMRAB 3 provides a three-year duration of immunity and can be administered to puppies as early as 3 months of age.1,3 Revaccinate 1 year after the first vaccination and then every 3 years.
there is not unaminious conscenses but in general State laws require the first rabbies vaccine be given before the age of six months follwed by a booster at I year and then every 3 years with a 3 year vaccine.

Giving the vaccine before 12 week is not reccommend nor safe as it becomes to likely the dogs immune system will not respond properly It is why many prefer the extra percaution of waiting until at least 16 weeks old.

Word of advice don't miss your 3 year booster. I keep missing mine by a few weeks or so for ours and you have to go back to the 1 year when you do...

Ok I am just worried about him because not all the dogs here are vaccinated and I would like to know that at least he is, I am going to take him to the vet to ask about this and what I am convinced is an ear infection as soon as we are allowed to leave our sites...here is to hoping the rain stops and I am not trapped in my site by mudslides!

I am thinking I may be able to hold off until 16 weeks though MikeyT we will see what the vet says!

tahts what they are there for. If you find yourself questioning a vets opinion it is often time to start looking for a new vet.

Puppies bite each other when they play, it's perfectly normal.
