Default Bogie is having skin issues! Any ideas??

Bogie is having some skin issues that started in September. He had some dandruff like patches on his rump that the vet checked when we kenneled him there for two days while we were out of town. They gave him a medicated bath and put him on a antibiotic for five days. The vet said it was not "hot spots" but possibly a type of seborrhea. Bogie seemed to clear up for a couple of weeks, but has starting having issues again. Now it's more like a tiny lump, feels kinda like a BB under the skin with scaly skin on top in a small circle shape. He doesn't try to scratch them, but when you doctor them you can tell he enjoys having them rubbed. They are mainly on his back, with a couple on his shoulder. He acts entirely normal with no other issues.

Back to the vet Monday, and he ran a thyroid check (looking for low thyroid which can cause skin issues) which came back negative. He put Bogie on a different antbiotic "cefpodoxime proxetil" 100mg tabet - 1 and 1/2 tablet once a day. He also has him on "Genta Spray" for the spots, and medicated shampoo with baths once a week letting the suds sit for ten minutes. After doctoring with the "Genta Spray" the spots seem to clear up, but new ones keep popping up. He probably currently has 8 to 10 spots. The vet said since the thyroid came back OK, he was suspecting it was metabolic, and we'd see how he does.

He is on Innova dry kibble and has been for five years with no problems and a beautiful coat. We have been mixing the lot fat version with the senior version.

?? Has anyone had this type of issues with their Basset?? Any ideas, thoughts, will be appreciated.

Not a great picture but you can see the circle shape and scabby flakes.

seborrhrea isof a genetic primary cause of skin issues in bassets however it ussual show up much sooner. Seborrhea is often a secondary skin condition in most other breed and likely the case here. shampoo therapy genereal recommend a minimium oif 15 minutes of contact time 1. because 10 minutes is the absolute minimium and 2 people tend to push to shorten the limit in the first place.

MY suggest is going to be the same as when any skin issue item come up and that is to bypass the primary care vet and go directly to a specialist ie vet that specializes in dermatology.. they are more expensive but in general reach a success resolution much faster and often cheaper avoid trial and error mistakes than a gp vet

find a dermatologist

Thanks, Mikey T! Now to get our vet to refer us to the one in our area. There is only one vet dermatologist in Memphis, and they take vet referals only!! Hopefully if the current treatment doesn't help he will refer us.

Walter has the exact same skin condition. After 30000.00 the best dermo in the Phila Pa area nothing was helping. Meds, shampoo, nothing. then one day a month agao I had a flash and realized it might be his dog food and after 1 month off of it the sores and dry spots have started to clear up. Not totally but almost. I fell so bad that it took me all this time and no other person realized it.

Has he been on the low fat/senior for the full 5 years? If the change was recent (or even if not as the formulas or his sensitivity may have changed) you might want to try the regular one, or even something different, just to see if it makes a difference.

FWIW, even though I think Innova is a good food, it made Chili itchy.

Riley has a skin issue that is going on also. Small bumps and lots of dandruff on his back. Very red underneath on his belly and very red in the creases... "armpits" as I call them. I started on antibiotics and a steroid called Tamaril P for itching. I also have some spray for the red areas and the vet said to give him some Zyrtec for the allergy. I just cant believe nothing is working to get rid of this.... He seems so miserable sometimes. I am going to change his food for sure.
