Default Excessive Licking...

I'm not sure where to put this... I think it is more of a behavior problem than a health problem, but this forum seemed more appropriate!

Anyway, Millie, my 15 month old Basset Hound licks...everything! Heaven help you if she gets in your face, because you will leave with a Basset Bath! She doesn't lick objects quite so much. She may sniff something and then lick it once. Its really just humans and other dogs, she licks them all over!

I understand licking under the chin can be (or is) a sign of submission, and she does that a lot to Lucy and I. However, I can't even cuddle on or hug Millie, without being licked to death! Even in the photo, Millie is licking another dog at the Dog Park...

Its been suggested to use Bitter Apple Spray or Cayenne Pepper, but Lucy and I would have to bathe in it! I'm not so sure about either of those to options...

Any other suggestions?

(I havehad face washer in the past and the one common denomiator I have see is salt. That is the lick because the like the taste not so much a behavioral issue however it can be handled as such that is providing the dog with a reard it is looking for ie salt via potato chip etc for acting appropriately,.

I've wondered if it didn't have something to do with salt... Do you think there could be an underlying medical condition, with her craving salt? The vet has said she is perfectly healthy.

Millie adores potato chips, and will do almost anything for one. I will have to start using them as a reward for appropriate behavior.

Thanks!

highly unlikely most of mine simply out grew the behavior but it can be years before that happens but they were more enthusiastic licker on hot days or you had been working /working out etc.

I also had a few soap eater that loved soad so the you could get the same behavior from them but only after you showered.
