I have been posting about our 10 month old Basset, Tulip, in the Seizure thread I started, but had a question about some behavioral issues as well which we think might be related to the meds, or the seizures.

Tulip (before Pheno) was a lively but pretty quiet girl. She has always been very submissive, sweet, and gentle. She was into everything and would usually destroy any paper/wood she could get her little mouth on (but what puppy doesn't??) She could usually be satiated with a bone, or a rawhide.

However, the last 90 days has taken her chewing and scouting for things to destroy to a whole new level. Library books, candles, counter items, paper, recycling bin, towels, rugs, chairs, stuffed animals. It is just ridiculous. She is also 'biting' (mouthing) us when we want her to do something she doesn't want to do. Go outside on last time before bed, stop jumping up on the table during dinner, get off the couch so we can sit down, etc.

When we are not home, Tulip is usually gated into the kitchen/entry because it gives her access to her water and the doggy door and her dog bed. She likes being able to pace a bit, and stretch her legs. However, the last several days she has completely destroyed...and I mean COMPLETELY DESTROYED some of our pantry and entry items. Yesterday morning before I even left for work she scaled a bookcase and ate 2 candles. Yesterday afternoon she destroyed a picture and frame we had on the entry table and snatched a few canned good and tried to chew them to death. We had to leave last night for a swim meet and when we came home (after only being gone for abt 2 hrs, and leaving her with a Kong full of peanut butter) to a kitchen (and some basset ears) COVERED in cornmeal, uncooked spaghetti, and blue corn tortillas.

Does anyone think she is doing this because she is hungry? Can the crazy scouting for naughty and then destroying everything in sight be a side effect of the Pheno? I haven't read anything that I can find online or otherwise that says so. Or, is it possible something has happened because of the seizures to her little brain??

This morning, she went in the crate when I left for work. I wasn't coming home to any more messes! Thankfully, I only work 4 hrs a day so she will be out soon enough, but I'd like to get to the bottom of this destruction!

Time for obedience classes. She probably would benefit from more exercise and something to occupy her mind.

She loves the dog park and we were regulars until the seizures started about 2 months ago. We've been struggling with the dog park exercise since then b/c her seizures were so frequent and would come on with no warning - I've been afraid to take her.

Daily walks are still part of the equation, however... she apparently just needs MORE. Which is hard in MI in the winter; I get COLD!

Good to hear she's acting 'normally'. Ha!

FWIW peno tends to act more as a depresent so in general it would have the opposite effect.
