I recommend Gluosamine. This is a supplement for joints especially for dogs with arthritis.

As has been said, consistent diet and a 30 minute walk/play each day. Nothing puts more strain on joints than a lack of muscle.

GLC Direct The Best joint care Products for joint pain relief | GLC 1000#

This is what we use for Bogie and swear by it. Our vet recommended it after the ACL rupture when he was a year old. It's expensive, but well worth it for Bogie.

Bogie in his seven years has had a completely snapped ACL in his left rear leg with surgery repair and replacement with 80# fishing line (done while running the Basset 500 in the house); a broken fibula in the right rear leg (happened when he was attacked by two pit bull dogs); a damaged disc in his neck from the same attack that thankfully healed after crate rest for two weeks and limited activity for two more months. With all these injuries he is still very healthy, no lameness or limping, etc.

Bogie also does not do stairs and is not allowed on the furniture or beds. We also use ramps for access to out RV and vehicles. Our first Basset, Bubba, ATB, developed disc problems in his back. At that time our vet said "Do you let him jump on beds and furniture or do stairs?" Our answer was "Yes!" The vet said "NO, MORE, if you want him to recover and stay healthy."

Good luck!
