Buddy is 8 he came in the house the other day and was dripping blood. I finally figured out it was from his hip. He had a little cyst there for probably a year and it had burst. I called the vet and she had an emergency so said put compresses on it and call back in the morning. I won't go into the gorey details but the sist came out and I cleaned it and put some neosporin in the hole( about the size of a pencil eraser) I slept on the couch with him that night and it seems much better. It does however keep getting a little pink tinted fluid that i just pat with a tissue and it goes away. My question is its been two days do these heal up on their own or is this going to be an open wound forever and if it doesn't look infected and doesn't seem to be bothering him should I still go to the vet? Does he need oral antibiotics? Thanks(sorry such a long story)

Depends, sometimes they heal sometimes not. When they don't you need them removed. If it's the first time he's had one, I would go to the vet. My dog had them his whole life, some got to be the size of tennis balls, but didn't burst for years.

Mattie had a cyst that we didn't know about on her shoulder about a year ago. One day my husband was rubbing her and he had blood on his hand. We figure out it was from a bump on Mattie.

We took her to the vet the next day and that's when we found out it was cyst. The vet gave us anti's and it took awhile for it to heal, but once you get anti's for it and it looks like it is getting better then you should have nothing to worry about. But if it is looking like it is not healing then you might have to take hound back and they might have to minor sugery to remove cyst.

I have a 7 year old honey bassett name Daisy. I never new this exhisted until about four months ago. She had a huge one on her neck that bursts and scared the crap out of me. After the trip to the vet i realised that it looks worse generally than it is. Now when they burst i rinse the wound with saline and squeeze on the Neosporin Ointment and.
they heal up just fine. You just need to keep an eye on them hen they burst and make sure theyre drying up. They should look a lot better a day or two after they open up.

most like a follocullar cyst of miss called a sebacious cyst which are very rare in dogs. if the sak is not remove they often refrom only to burst again in a reapeating cycle. The material inside the cyst can be very irratation to the skin and retard healing so it need to be clean very well. Large holes will heal faster if sutured.

I would still have it looked at. Gabby had a similar episode, the cyst had to be removed.

My first Basset Chloe has a serbacious cyst, one day I thought I had a tick as I found a patch that looked like coffe grounds, I remember taking her to the vet, vet rubbing her finger over it knocking the top off then a huge amount of what was like cottage cheese comming out. Freaked me out! She had surgery on hers eventually!

Lucas has had a number of cysts, a couple removed under GA & others I have managed to deal with. Has one on his shoulder but as I haven't been able to get the sac out it keeps coming back, has anyone had any success with a poultice or something similar to help draw it out?
