]Hi everyone - We own a nine year old Basset named Daisy. When I got home from work last night, I noticed a small bump on her neck, up by her ears. It got bigger today and I finally used trimmers to cut some of her hair to get a better look. The skin was broken, like she got bit by something. No wincing or crying, she just hopped up on the sofa and is now snoozing. I do not want to overreact, but I don't want to trivialize any cysts either. Any advice the members can share is appreciated.

I know you realize that no one on this forum is qualified to diagnose anything, so I guess you're really asking if a call to the vet is over-reacting. Everyone has their own criteria about when to call the vet: I personally use the same standards for my dogs that I use for myself.

So if I had something on my own neck that looked like a bite,that was rapidly increasing in size, and that could possibly be infected, I would have my doctor take a look at it.

I agree with murraysmom - anything new I'd have checked by the vet. Spencer has numerous sebaceous cysts. They have all been checked, measured & noted in his records by his vet. Occasionally one will rupture. I've become used to dealing with them, and will take care of them myself at home unless it's something new or unusual.

Ditto what Murraysmom and AmyB said. I 'd get it checked by your vet.

AmyB, Moe is almost twelve and has a long history of sebaceous cysts, too. He's had three surgeries to remove twelve of them. He currently has a problem cyst that gets infected now and again but our vet has authorized repeat refills on his antibiotic whenever we need it. No more surgeries for my elderly baby if we can avoid it...
