Default Newbie here.... Question about Breeding

Hello everyone, we are new here and need to ask a breeding question. Our new addition is a male named Sampson, and he is tri-colored.

The question is can you breed a male with any of his offspring, or do you need to get a female from a whole different line? We've heard a lot of different things, and just want to do the right thing.

Thanks,
April & Kimmie

Intrafamily breeding is a common practice in Arkansas, and look where it's gotten them.

When breeding any line of dogs, the goal is to improve the qualities. Wile in-breeding is done- it should only be done by someone with thorough knowledge of the the genetics of the breed with a specific goal in mind. I would never, ever recommend this for an inexperienced breeder. Before you consider breeding your houndie be sure you have had both he, and mate, screened for specific genetic illnesses that are common to the basset- after all- the goal for all of us should be to have the best possible outcomes for any puppies that are bred. There are too many wee ones in need of homes as it is-

you can breed father to daughter or mother to son.this is not inbreeding this is line breeding.it's a real close breeding but they have been done many times b/4.NOW both dogs should be as close as possible to the AKC/BHCA conformation standard as possible because you will be doubling up on GOOD traits, but you will also be doubling up on BAD traits if any exist.this is not inbreeding because in a Father/Daughter mating there will be 2 different bitch lines( the mother of the Sire and the Mother of the Daughter).this is Oppisite in a Mother/Son where the Sire lines of both dogs are different. Some people will not go any closer than Uncle to niece or Aunt to nephew.INBREEDING is when you breed brother to sister when all the blood lines are the same. When you do any breeding you must be able to CULL any dog with deformities, and in a line breeding you will be doubling up on them if there are any.CULL means kill incase you didn't know.these are a few of the things to look at b/4 you go and breed ANY DOGS.If you are not bettering the breed through Shows or Performance events and are just thinking of doing it because your dog is CUTE please don't do it but if you want to get serious and do it RIGHT hook up with a experienced Breeder that is a member of The Basset Hound Club of America.if they are a member of the BHCA they will practice to a higher standard,it's not a guarantee that they will but they should be more reputable.

Close breeding is not for newbies, you really need good knowledge of the breed and of the related dogs and basic genetic knowledge.
