WASHINGTON - 05/03/05 - The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has adopted a final rule that will help the entity track incidents involving loss, injury or death of an animal during transport.
The new rule takes effect June 15, and airlines will be required to submit specific information to the DOT within 15 days of the end of the month in which an incident occurs. The reports will be made public through DOT's monthly publication Air Travel Consumer Report, which is available at http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports .
Previously, incidents were included in companies' respective lost baggage reports. More than 2 million pets and other living animals are transported by air every year in the United States, according to DOT.
