i took emma to the vet today for a check up and she weighed 30 pounds vet also estimated her age at 3 or 4 but she liked that she was in good shape callin her 'petite'.

so my question to yall is have yall encountered many bassets as small as her?

ive always known she was pretty small for a basset but didnt realize how small until today.
i figured id put alittle more like 10-15 pounds on her instead of 5-10 pounds over this past year. she looks alot better than when i first found her and her ribs/hips were showin. shes also a completly diffrent dog these days from a year ago. her gotcha/foundya day is 12-23.

My neighbors have a female basset they got from a backyard breeder, and she is very petite like yours. She probably weighs about 30 lbs. Bassets vary in size quite a bit, my girl pickle is 50lbs and she is more to the middle of the weight range.

Genitics will decide the general weight if the parents are smaller the pups usually will be too. Typically though bassets generally should be in the 55 to 70 lb range if the bones are heavy as they should be ,the description in the standard is a large dog on short legs. There are irresponsable breeders who advertise a minature basset,virtually ,is no such thing and if you pay more money thinking you are getting one you have been had. Smaller than average happens do keep their weight down and if they have bad fronts with feet turning out badly this is especially important.

I've never had one less than 60lbs - and as heavy as 85lbs - I think we have a few on here though that have smaller hounds. My little one Page is my 60lb girl and I kinda like it - she's like having a puppy when you're used to having the big girls - especially since they consider my lap draped across my chest – it’s nice having a little lighter load on me. I should post a photo sometime of that – they missed the class of what the definition of a “lap” is.

Like Pickle, my Olive (So much food!) is a year old and she weighs 50lbs as of yesterday. The vet tech said she looks a little heavy, even! It sounds light, but Olive is on the petite side and she looks healthiest at about the 45lb range. She's just put on a little holiday weight, like her mama.

It all depends on the build of your dog, really.

I have a puppy 3 months old that is 20 lbs and will most likely be a good 65 lb as an adult.Page and Mabel's mom,Esa, (and the 3 months old mom as well) is usually 65 or a bit over.

Molly is pretty small for a basset. She weighs about 35 pounds, which is a nice, healthy weight for her. I got her as a rescue and don't know anything about her genetic background.

Emma is supposed to be around 40 pounds at full grown only. Her parents are both around 40-45 pounds each. The family said that her mum is petite because she's a French basset??? I am clueless.

"French basset" is just a term used by poor breeders as an excuse for why their dogs don't have the typical Basset Hound look.
