Default Looking for a Bassett puppy

My family is looking for a Basset puppy to add to our family. Our beloved Bassett of ten years recently passed. We rescued her, but she was full of health problems. This time, we'd like to buy a dog from a good breeder, preferably one who genetically screens. Our Basset will be a companion dog, so she doesn't have to be perfect for show standards. Price is no option. We are willing to travel to meet the breeder and again to pick up the puppy.

Please let me know if you know of anyone with puppies available this spring. We'd prefer a female, red and white or tricolor.

Where do you live? Try the Basset Hound Club of America website. They list breeders by state.

FWIW there is currently only one genetic test for basset hounds for what appears to be a rather obscure/rare bleeding disorder that occurs only in the breed. All other breeding discsion to minimize genetic issues must be done by pedigree analyisis i.e. know problems that occur in particular lines and by breadth of knowledge of the line what problems have occured in offspring of related dogs etc.

There are also sever limits on the reliability of certain test like cerf and ofa for making breeding decisions as well. The reliability of a Gonscopy as a diagnostic tool for glaucoma is in severe question with many learned experts saying it is totally useless. The ability for ofa to affect hips ect has been highly mixed as it appears there are many factors involved other than simply genetics and genetics in some breeds is a realitive small factor.

We are in Chicago and haven't had much luck finding a local breeder. I didn't get a response from Topsfield. The basset hound club of america list is hit or miss. Seems like a lot of the listed folks are no longer breeding.

Does anyone know anything about longearedhounds.

Just by the name I'd say avoid, but I'll check out their site if they have one.

The only one I know of who has any puppies right now would be Olde Fashion Bassets out of West Bend, WI. I don't know if she has any still available though as I know she was flooded with requests. She may know of someone in your area though who may have puppies available.

Soundtrack,

The url is www.longearedhounds.com. I'd appreciate it if you would take a look. She's sent me a couple of photos of the puppies and is happy to have me come and visit, but it is really hard to tell whether she's reputable.

Many thanks.

Dana

Yoy might wish to check out this article to help you make a determination:
How to tell a good breeder website from a bad one Ruffly Speaking : Ruffly Speaking

Then compare the longearedhounds site to the Olde Fashion site.

FWIW, the Whisnants are not listed in the BHCA breeders directory.

Hmm... would I go with them, No. There dogs do at least appear to be dogs that look relatively close to the standard at least which is more than I can say for some of the websites people have posted here. The thing I always look for in a breeder's website though is if they mention any testing they do on their dogs and I want to see pedigrees listed as well. There is no reason to hide the pedigree. I want to see some sort of titles in the lineage of the pedigree, preferrably from both parents at least and if not then I want to see quite a few titles in the previous generations. Just my opinion but I wouldn't go for them, I'd keep looking. I know it's hard in this day and age of "I want it now" but you really will be much happier finding a good and reputable breeder and waiting for a puppy from them rather than just jumping in cause someone, anyone has puppies ready for sale now. Trust me on that one... I've gone that route before and paid dearly (in the pocketbook and the heartstrings) for it in the end and lost her at 3 1/2.

I can parrot what Smitte says to a "T", even the same age!

This time we began a search and got extremely lucky. As in, `someone was REALLY looking out for us` lucky. We anticipated a wait, and were prepared to wait for exactly what we wanted. It turned out to be a complete fluke that we didn't have to wait. You should decide what exactly you want. Colors, sex, bloodlines, appearance, price and distance and go for just what you want.
