My dog, Homer is 13 months old. The breeder I bought Homer from told me he was a standard/english basset mix, but nevertheless 100% basset. As Homer grew so did my suspician that I was lied to by the breeder. I did my research and the tallest report of a basset's height I could find was 17". My dog is 24" at his shoulder, and has traits that resemble a coonhound, or lab more then a basset. I contancted the breeder and she reasured me he was a purebread basset, and he gets his height from the english basset. I've yet to find proof that an english basset is anything more then a artesien normand or fauve de bretagne bread in england. Am I wrong and looking in the wrond direction or is my little Homie something else? He looks like a coonhound to me. Homer is gorgeous!!!!

He's beautiful, but I really don't see any strong basset characteristics. I'm sure some of the resident breeders will have an expert opinion.

Homer looks gorgeous but there's no way he's a Basset Hound as his legs are far too long!

in the USA a "english basset" is typical a poorly bred specimen used as an excuse as to why the dog does not look like it is supose too. The term is also used to differentiate field dogs originating from engish hunting packs rather than from the conformation ring, The biggest distinguish characteristic is the english basset is close coupled, that is its rib cage exend farther back much closer to the loins than a conformation basset, an engish basset has less of a waist,

Basset mixed even with tall dogs general result in stubbly legged off spring there is a real question tha a 24" dogs has any basset in its immeadiate lineage. Gotta say he tend to look like a Treeing walker Coonhound.

Yes he is a very cute boy but like the other's have said if there was any basset in there he would have some of the dwarfism in his legs and obviously it's just not there with him. I'd say some sort of Coonhound and most likely Mikey's guess of a Treeing Walker Coonhound is probably the closest. Hes a lovely boy though.

Homer is a one in a million, I thought I was in trouble when I read bassets are amung the most stubborn dogs to train, but I was surprised with his ability to learn, and his keen instincts. He has that nobel solemn look that can melt your heart. I first thought he might have been a basset/lab mic but the "bassador" has those dominant short legs[maybe, just maybe he got the very best of both genes(which would explain his odd coat)I also suspected he was a walker coonhound because his tri colored coat, but i noticed a walker coon hound's coat is very define, you wouldnt find the tan fading into the black, nor would you see black and tan ticks, but he might have the faded tri color due to his mix.. I've seen pictures of mother and she's a lemon colored hound like mine but appears to be a little shorter. Hopefully your help will get me some answers from the breeder, but if not oh well. Thanks for replying, and thank you for the compliments, I take a lotta pride in him!

hmmm lets see if we substitute Foxhound for basset we might have something. Standard=American Foxhound and English Foxhound is taller and broader than a the American.

american Foxhound 21-25" english foxhound 24 inches tall at the shoulder.

Your dog is beautiful, basset or not. That being said, this "breeder" sounds very shady to me. They said that he was a mix, but 100% basset? Those 2 things contradict each other. It's mathematically impossible for something to be 100% of something, but at the same time a mix of that one thing and something else.

I am a strong advocate of adopting a homeless dog instead of buying a puppy, but if you are going to buy a puppy, I'd recommend always insisting on seeing the mother. A responsible breeder will be more than happy to show you the mother and then you can know exactly what you're getting, or at least 50% anyway. You can also make sure it's the kind of breeder you want to support, i.e. NOT a puppy mill.
