pregnant basset

My basset is pregnant, and I have been doing research, and have found alot on dog pregnancy, but nothing on bassets in particular. Is there anything special that I need to know? Anyone who has gone thruogh basset whelping?

The first thing you need to know is that 10 months is WAY to young to be having puppies. It is like a 12 year old girl having a baby.

I suggest an immediate spay.

Should you decide not to spay and take your chances, you should know that primary and secondary inertia can be problems, c-sections are not uncommon, and you need to watch them 24/7 for the first 2-3 weeks as the mother will accidentally lie on the pups and crush them.

So I hope you have plenty of money set aside and can book 2-4 weeks off work for this project.

My 10 month old is not the one having puppies, I am not that irresponsable. I have three bassets, two females and one male. The pregnant female is two years old, which is old enough to breed, according to my vet.

You claim to be responsible because you've asked your vet whether or not your bitch is old enough to breed, but you have to come on the internet for advice about what to do now?

Sorry -- your level of responsibility is, at best questionable......

Aruuu, Is'nt that what this forum is for? My vet is not a basset hound expert, in fact my bassets are the only ones that he treats. So, what is wrong with coming on the internet asking for advice? I assume that their are experienced breeders on this forum that may have helpful advice to offer. That is what I asked for, advice, not judgements, about how breeding is wrong, blah, blah, blah. If their were no breeders, none of us would have our beloved pets, did anyone ever consider that? So it is my choice to breed, and nothing anyone can say will stop me, so all of you anti-breeders, can get off of your high horses.

It's a question of responsible breeding, not elimiating breeding altogether so the breed would die out.

I don't breed - I rescue. But I do know from other posts on this forum that breeding goes far beyond having a cute basset and breeding it to another cute basset. Responsible breeders do the genetic testing prior to breeding to ensure a healthy litter of puppies. There is pre and post natal care that I'm sure not even going to try to get into.

And after the litter is born you have a responsibility to each of those pups to make sure they live a long and happy life. Are you prepared to take them back when something happens to the home they go to? Or will they end up with me - and many others like me - in rescue?

The way your post is worded makes it sound like your basset got pregnant either accidently or on a whim. If that's incorrect I apologize for the assumption, but you haven't given us much info to go on.

I do suggest you find a vet farmiliar with bassets. From the posts I have read many bassets MAY have probelms giving birth. You don't want your hound or her pups to die because someone didn't do their homework.

Mikey - I hope you've got a couple of cold ones in reserve!

Was this pregnancy intentional? What is your reason for breeding? Are you trying to better the breed, are you looking for financial gain?...

Of course we need breeders otherwise we wouldn've have our beloved Bassets, but there are also way too many pets (of all kinds) being killed in shelters on a daily basis. I have 2 rescue Bassets and I know that shelters are very overcrowded and there are so many unwanted pets already...

So many people think it would be really cool to have puppies, kittens, etc without fully thinking about the long term. Are you prepared for a lifelong commitment to all your puppies?

Hopefully you will not take these and other comments as attacks, but as concern. There are so many of us who rescue and see a growing problem and to hear of someone adding to the problem (though maybe not intentional) it saddens us.

Responsible breeders do not breed first and then ask for advice. They spend considerable time learning about breeding and about their breed beforehand.

I have already mentioned the main issues specific to bassets. If there is a basset hound club or an all breed kennel club nearby I suggest that you join it and see if there is someone willing to mentor you in person. There is far too much involved in breeding to cover it adequately for you to know every thing you need to in a forum like this.

To answer your question, yes, the pregnancy was intentional, both parents are basset hounds so they will not be mixed. As far as my reson for breeding, I love basset hounds in general, and have had many people ask me where I got mine, I just moved out to central Texas from California, and I have not seen any other basset hounds out here, so I know that it will be easy to find homes for them. I am a stay at home mom, I don't work so I have time to attend to the dogs. All of my dogs are AKC. I do not know if I am going to make breeding my profession. I plan on waiting to see how this first whelping goes and then take it from there. Again I was asking for advice from people tht have experience, not criticism or judgements, or personal opinions. I seem to recall a post a few months back from someone wanting to breed their dog and getting ripped apart. Personally I don't get why everyone gets so worked up on this subject.
