Hopefully not your male that you were posting about that you are not sure if he is really purebred.

'Cause we've had to clean up the messes left by careless, uninformed breeders.

Looks like you answered your own question. Someone that breeds as a profession i.e. to make money, is a puppymill by definition. Hobby breeders that put the breed first hardly ever make any money and most loose substaintial sums doing the genetic testing, research and showing necessary to insure the limited breeding they are doing is for the betterment of the breed and not just a matter of convienince to produce puppies of questionable quality. AKC is not a measure of quality on of ansestry. The time to ask for advice is before you get started in a project and mess it up rather than wait until it can be salvaged. Breeding pet quality dog does not improve the breed. Given that no testing or research to the genetic problems of their particular heritage can be a recipe for disaster. Hip displasia, bleeding disorders, and glacoma are prevelent in the breed along with a host of lessor genetic issues Without taking the time or effor to do your homework first there is not much that can be done except as Miraim has sugggested above to reolve the problem. Give the lack of preplaning and lack of knowledge on welping and socializtion that are too eztensive to even begin even a basic education on a forum such as this any puppies will be getting far from an ideal start in life.

Many of either have rescued hound or work with rescue orgs that know from experience that far too often such breedings are disaster in the making. Dog with health issue, dogs with temperment issues make them unsutable as pets from both genetic and environmental causes. if you look on the FAQ forum you will find a thread on responsible breeding and what it takes read it and understand.

An perhaps most telling is the lack of effort.

I just moved out to central Texas from California, and I have not seen any other basset hounds out here[/b]
Could be that no one in cetral texas wants basset hounds must be a lack of availability. Pffft. a responsaible breeders have homes line up before the breeding even occurs. and just a little qoogle search will turn up Basset hound Clubs in the Area

Dal-Tex Basset Hound Club

Highland Lakes Basset hound Club

. I do not know if I am going to make breeding my profession. I plan on waiting to see how this first whelping goes and then take it from there. Again I was asking for advice from people tht have experience, not criticism or judgements, or personal opinions. I seem to recall a post a few months back from someone wanting to breed their dog and getting ripped apart. Personally I don't get why everyone gets so worked up on this subject.[/b]
