Hi,
I let Basil off in certain trusted areas, these are mainly where we walk most days and has limited surprises of who we might meet.
Unfortunately forums had spooked me so much about not letting a basset off leash that he was nearly 2 before i felt i would make a serious effort to let him off and see what happens, fortunatley all seems good and i am much more comfotable now but still have a way to go. i only let him off when he is 'engaged' with other dogs, playing or moving together, backed up with sausagemeat for recall treats.
Works most of the time but for when in high jinx with another dog or disengaged and sniffing (when i leash him again mostly anyway to get him to walk faster with me rather than stopping all the time!)
